Western Australia

(SOUTHERN REGION)

The itinerary was for 10 days and 2N Perth, 2N Margaret River, 2N Albany and 3N Perth. We took off to Perth on 15th April and back to Kuala Lumpur on 24th Mei 2015. Mileage covered was more than 1,000 km.

PERTH

We stayed in Malaysia Hall Perth for 2 nights. Morning of 17th April we left Perth City heading south towards Margaret River.  We rented a Hyundai Getz at AUD36 for 5 days (AUD180). Comfortable enough for the 3 of us and only 1 driver.
Our first pitstop for coffee, it was raining all the way. Sejukk...

BUNBURY

We stop at the Farmers Market to stock up some groceries and fruits. The port city of Bunbury is the third largest city in Western Australia after the state capital, Perth, and Mandurah. It is situated 175 kilometres (109 mi) south of Perth's central business district (CBD).  Bunbury was first established in 1836, and was named in recognition of Lieutenant Henry William St Pierre Bunbur

It's known for wild bottlenose dolphins that often swim close to the beach at Koombana Bay. Nearby is the Dolphin Discovery Centre and the Leschenault Inlet, with calm waters and parkland rich with mangroves and birdlife. Bunbury’s western coastline spans popular Back Beach and Wyalup-Rocky Point, with its basalt rock formations. (Wikipedia)

BUNBURY WILDLIFE PARK

The Bunbury Wildlife Park is home to a range of furry and feathered Australian animals including marsupials, birds and reptiles.  Red kangaroos, blue peacock and black swans.

BUSSELTON

BUSSELTON PIER & ROY MORRIS PLATFORM

Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty (pier) in the world, stretching almost 2 km out to sea over stunning Geographe Bay, from the town of Busselton, Western Australia. The shallow waters of Geographe Bay restricted ship movement, hence a long jetty was required so that cut timber could be transported to ships.

The jetty construction commenced in 1853 and the first 176m section was opened in 1865. The jetty was extended numerous times until the 1960s, ultimately reaching a length of 1841m. The last commercial vessel called at the jetty in 1971 and the jetty was closed the following year. It passed into the control of Busselton Shire and has been gradually restored and improved since. The jetty has survived Cyclone Alby in 1978, borers, weathering, several fires, and the threat of demolition, to have become a major regional tourist attraction.

The jetty features a rail line along its length, a relic of the railway line into Busselton from Bunbury. The line now carries tourists along the jetty to an underwater observatory which opened to the public in 2003. A waterslide was built around a lighthouse structure next to the landward end of the jetty. It first opened in 1981. Wikipedia

MARGARET RIVER

Accomodation and our first stop for the night, 272 km later, is My Little Place in Marg, Margaret River. We booked this homestay from Stayz.com.au. AUD130 per night (AUD260). It was quite easy to find the house and the house is a 1-bedroom. Spacious and well equipped. Sleeps 4. With a washing machine and drier. Margaret River is home to a stunning coastline, world-leading wineries, whale watching and exciting river activities.

All communication with the owner was through email. Ambik dan pulang kunci sendiri. No hassles at all. And as usual, we left the house as tidy as we came in... that is to be expected.

I like the house, its simple design and it is easy to maintain as well as very spacious.

A DAY IN MARGARET RIVER

VINEYARDS

While in Margaret River, we are not into vineyards, though the area is nothing but them. Took photos only and had a clear view of how they kept the stem sturdy and the branches well pruned.

CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Too touristic!.. but at least this factory gives free chocolate to taste.

YULLINGUP

Yallingup is a town 6 kilometres from Margaret River.  It is a popular tourist destination because of its beaches and limestone caves, and proximity to Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Originally named by the settlers as Yallingup Cave, the cave was renamed Ngilgi Cave to acknowledge the Aboriginal dreaming story attached to the cave. The story is part of the heritage of the Wardandi people who are the traditional custodians of the caves in the region.

LEEUWIN NATURALISTE NATIONAL PARK

The national park takes in amazing views of the stunning Indian Ocean complete with tidal pools, lagoons, sandy beaches, rugged cliffs and rock formations.

AUGUSTA

Augusta is a beautiful fishing town set on Cape Leeuwin, the most south-western point of Western Australia, where the Indian Ocean and Southern Oceans meet.

JEWEL CAVE OF MARGARET RIVER

Jewel Cave is the biggest show cave in Western Australia, with three massive chambers. It is also home to one of the longest straw stalactites found in any tourist cave in the world.

CAPE LEEUWIN LIGHTHOUSE

The historic Australia’s tallest mainland lighthouse, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse at Augusta is situated at the tip of a spectacular peninsula where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet - the most south-westerly point of Australia. This famous landmark was constructed from local limestone in 1895, and is still a vital working lighthouse for vessels navigating the treacherous cape. Phew... I managed to walked up the stairs and went round the platform despite a gutsy winds.

BORANUP KARRI FOREST (VALLEY OF THE GIANTS)

Towering karri trees, some over 60m in height, undulate across the valley. With sunlight streaming onto their smooth trunks, this is some of the best sights in Margaret River Region.
The forest is a feast for the senses with the forest floor tumbling with wildflowers, orchids and funghi (in season) together with the sounds of native birds and the fresh smell of eucalypt.

ALBANY

The first European sighting was in 1629 by Dutch explorers on their way to Jakarta Batavia. During the spring of 1791, Captain George Vancouver was the first to sail into the protected waters of one very excellent port that he named King George Sound. He spent two weeks in the area and named many of the prominent features, including Princess Royal Harbour, one of the worlds largest natural harbours.

However, it was not until 1826 that Major Edmund Lockyer sailed into King George Sound on the Brig Amity with soldiers, cattle, supplies and the intention of establishing Western Australias first penal colony. The British flag was raised the next year and the town officially named Fredericks Town in honour of Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. Albany never became a penal colony; instead it remained a military outpost for New South Wales and by the early 1830s, everyone was calling the settlement Albany.

We arrived late in the evening, but it was easy to find the house. Warm and comfy as expected. Unit 4 costs us AUD120 per night (AUD240). Checking in and out on our own.

A DAY IN ALBANY

ANZACS / PRINCESS HARBOUR

The ANZACS left from Albany, sailing away to World War One to show the world that Australia, the old wild colonial boy, had come of age. Later, it was high on the hill overlooking the charming streets and elegant colonial architecture of Albany that the first ANZAC Day ceremony was held to remember the glorious youth from all over Australia who did not return.

The 1914 departure point where over 40,000 servicemen and women left for Gallipoli. In a reciprocal agreement in 1985 the channel leading into Princess Harbour was officially named Ataturk Channel whilst the Turkish Government officially named the beach at Gallipoli where the Australian and New Zealand troops landed “Anzac Cove”.

CAT buses operate on regular routes and are a free service for the community, providing convenient travel around the city. CAT bus stops are located throughout the city and have distinctive stands and provide real-time passenger information about when the next bus is due. Most of our time here we use CAT buses.
